School Notes

  • Proctor's campus includes over forty-five buildings, twenty small dormitories, a privately owned and operated ski hill, state-of-the-art classrooms and art facilities, 2,500 acres of forest and ponds surrounding beautiful natural and synthetic playing fields that are tucked against Ragged Mountain's south slope. A sense of community can only truly be felt when you step on campus. The strength of Proctor's community comes from the depth of relationships formed between students and faculty. An egalitarian student body gives equal value to each student regardless of age. A relaxed dress code and policy allowing students to address teachers by first names contribute to the informal culture of the school. Students are treated as young adults and asked to collaborate with their teachers in the learning process.
  • By redefining academic rigor as the process through which students push themselves beyond their comfort zones, students and faculty learn just how important trust is to learning. Honors and advanced placement courses complement non-traditional classes and challenging off-campus programs, allowing students and teachers to form relationships around shared interests. Formal on-campus academic support takes place in Proctor's Learning Skills program, but it is the informal support provided by teachers who offer extra help sessions at breakfast, in their dormitories, or in their classrooms in the evening that further emphasizes self-advocacy skills and encourages academic risk-taking. Because we are challenging, we are also supportive. Proctor is widely recognized for national leadership in experiential education. To our community, these programs are not separate but integral to the Proctor experience, as almost all students elect to spend a trimester or two enrolled in off-campus programs. Choosing from over 135 academic courses, five term-long off-campus programs, more than 30 art courses, and 30 athletic and afternoon programs allows students to craft a Proctor experience that is truly unique.
  • Whether your interests involve starting a radio program in Proctor's state-of-the-art recording studio, pursuing athletics at the next level, studying advanced biology or robotics, or building a boat in the woodshop, opportunities abound for you to engage in both the pursuit of new avocations and the mastery of an existing passion. Which path will you choose?
