About the Author:

Years Attended ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø School:
1999-2001
Sports and Activities:
Hillcrest was a place I felt encouraged and challenged to grow. Learning from the best teachers and having opportunities to develop musical skills, travel with the choir, lead weekly worship sessions and be a part of all the fun extracurricular activities was amazing! I made lifelong friendships and got to experience so many different cultures in one place. I loved the clubs and off campus activities we were able to be involved in and am so thankful for the care and guidance received while studying there.
College Enrolled:
Free Lutheran Bible College
Home Town, State:
Campo Largo, PR Braz

Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
Hillcrest is full of history, a legacy of education and impact has already been established. Being a part of this historical and impactful institution gives you a sense of belonging and purpose for something great. The way each student is valued and mentored to reach his fullest potential and to use each gif and talent to the glory of God and to serve this generation is what education should be all about. At Hillcrest it is, and it has been so for over 100 years. Hillcrest will continue to be a be on of hope, a formative place for children, youths and young adults and fulfill its mission. I have always appreciated how involved families from the community are in the school and the encouragement received from them is important for the students.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
Being mentored by such thoughtful and intelligent teachers was crucial to my growth and success entering adulthood. The love for Jesus, the depth of knowledge and the challenging academics allied with encouragement made me flourish, I am thankful for the instruction received, the friendships made, the experiences and opportunities I had while at Hillcrest. The impact it had on my father (also alumni), then on me has led me to send my children to receive the same education and mentorship at Hillcrest.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
Make friends, don’t stay overly connected with life at home so that you can fully experience the friendship and opportunities of Hillcrest life.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
Teachers, music and mission, friends.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Life in the dorms is amazing! There is such a great balance between freedom yet very mindful guidance and intentionality by the staff. The friendships from all over the globe give you a world culture experience while living in the dorms and receiving a fantastic educational foundation.

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Hillcrest is full of amazing teachers who are experts in their fields, yet so personal in their approach. Learning was never mundane, but filled with life and challenging questions and discussions. The books read were relevant, each activity intentional and memorable. I loved the classes taken, my admiration for the quality of the teachers made me pursue teaching as well. I still recall the amazing books and discussions from English class with Mr Undseth, the depths of knowledge and conversations in History with Mr Preston, as well as the beauty of learning the Bible in each setting. French class was productive and after each class I felt like I could speak to anyone! The list goes on… The manner in which each subject lead us to the truth from God’s Word and how to use that knowledge in our daily lives was impactful. I am forever grateful for the teachers, books and experiences I had while at Hillcrest!

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Everyone has the chance to be involved! There are so many options and such an incredible coaching team that the growth, fun and skill development is inevitable and incredible! Also, the school spirit, the cheering and encouragement of the sports is so much fun.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
I was able to have voice lessons, participate in small vocal groups, be in the worship band and sing in the school choir! Music is amazing! Our repertoire unique and challenging, the outcome was breathtaking. While on tour, every concert was well attended and people were awestruck by the quality of the musical performance. There were also band and orchestra opportunities, which I didn’t participate in, but they were great! Many of my friends went on to college to pursue music and received significant scholarships and recognition. At the time we did not have the theater department that Hillcrest now has and is such a rich addition to the school.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
Serving the community is encouraged and such a great way to meet others and share the love of Jesus. I was part of the missionary club, we would write letters to the missionaries, send care packages, pray for them and raise awareness. There were also other opportunities to help in the churches in the community in various ways. I led music and worship in different churches, I remember that fondly. Also, I participated in different gatherings in town to share about my culture (Brazil), made food for some other events. The various cultures at Hillcrest make it unique and grant us opportunities to learn from each other and share these cultures with the local community.

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
We became a family! There was great leadership staff that loved and cared for us yet giving us opportunities to be responsible and wise, without excessive control. The friendships made were precious, many with whom I am still close to 25 years later! Being a princess in the castle is every girl’s dream, that is possible at Hillcrest, though it might not be glamour and luxurious, it is unique and memorable. The view from my fourth floor corner room with its angled ceiling will never be forgotten, not the beautiful sunsets from the room I had on west side my senior year.

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
There was variety and a great salad bar. Sunday pizza was always a highlight as well.

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Fergus Falls is a small, safe and unique midwestern town. Not too big, with many things at a walking distance. Not having a car is not a problem because you can get downtown with a 8 minute walk. The school also provides weekly trips to Walmart and other shopping options.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
I loved getting to know local families, going out for Sunday dinners at their homes, having game nights and occasionally going to concerts with friends. When you are with great people you can always have a fun time!
